George Bryan Porter
                            

George Bryan Porter (February 9, 1791 - July 6, 1834) son of Revolutionary War hero Andrew Porter, was a Union soldier and American politician. He was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. His eldest brother, Robert Porter was President Judge of the Pennsylvania 3rd District Court. A second older brother, David Rittenhouse Porter, was Governor of Pennsylvania, 1839–1845. His younger brother James Madison Porter was Secretary of War 1843 - 1844 and primary founder of Lafayette College in Easton. He was uncle of Horace Porter, U.S. ambassador to France, 1897 - 1905 and aide to U.S. Grant during The Civil War.

George Bryan Porter was a Major during the War of 1812. He attended law school in Litchfield, Connecticut and practiced in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
In 1827 he served as a Democrat representative in the Pennsylvania State House.

He was appointed by President Andrew Jackson Governor of Michigan Territory in 1831. He died in 1834 during a cholera epidemic in Detroit and is buried there in Elwood Cemetery. He was married to Sarah Humes of Pennsylvania, and had at least four children.

One son, General Andrew Porter, married Margarite Biddle of the famous Biddle family.During The American Civil War he participated in the First Battle of Bull Run.
